My name is Hugh Logan, a native of Petite Martinique, Grenada. I am 31 years old, born on the 3rd August, 1976. My journey to the priesthood began as a little boy. From as far back as I can remember, whenever my teachers at primary school told us to write an essay on what we would like to be when we grow up, I wrote I would like to be a doctor, a teacher… but deep down I always wanted to write that I wanted to be a priest. Eventually, I did write it as a project in preparation for confirmation. In First Holy Communion class I was intrigued with the question of the existence of God. What proved to me that God existed? I had dramatic spiritual experiences. Let me share with you one of those experiences. One evening around 6 p.m. at the age of ten I was sweeping the yard in front of my parents’ house and when I looked up I saw someone dressed as a priest in the distance. I stared at him and he seemed to have been staring at me. After about a few seconds this man began to glide up into the air and went beyond the hills. This experience confirmed for me that there is a spiritual world apart from the flesh; therefore, it helped me to understand the definition of God as a “supernatural being.” |

My stay at the home of Ms. Sylverius Caesar (Sister Sylverius as she is affectionately known) and worshipping with the Catholic Community at Belmont, Grenada, furthered my spiritual growth. The experience of the family rosary on a Sunday morning and family meals exposed me to community living. The space was created there to deepen my involvement in the Roman Catholic Church by participating in the choir, as an altar server, cleaning the church for the liturgies, catechesis, lector, attending charismatic renewals… My prayer life deepened immensely. After Sunday Mass, our then parish priest Fr. Sean Doggett stood at the front of the church building and greeted the people as their exited the church. Fr. Sean often repeated to me (as a little boy) and others "You will make a good priest." These simple words of Fr. Sean were both confirmation and encouragement towards my vocation to the priesthood. After graduating from high school I worked for about three years: My first job, as an assistant lab technician at the Grenada Brewery; second, as a teacher at South St. George Government School. In August, 1998, I entered St. John Vianney and the Ugandan Martyrs Seminary, Trinidad. People often ask me why I want to be a priest. There is a love for the priesthood and church that grew naturally within my heart, a love that I cannot explain. Additionally, I understood at a very tender age that happiness lies beyond material things and there is a deep peace that we all yearn for which can be found only in God. What are my likes and interests? I love preaching, studying, teaching and the arts. It was at the seminary that I discovered my God-given artistic talent of designing and making banners. I love the outdoors, and enjoy sports, particularly swimming and jogging. As a priest, one of my goals is to help my fellow Christian brothers and sisters develop a personal relationship with Jesus. I would like to dedicate some time to teaching about the richness of the Roman Catholic faith, the history of the church and the Holy Bible. Often I hear people say “the Mass is boring.” When we learn to understand the meaning of the Mass and can differentiate between entertainment and worship, the Mass will be more meaningful to people. Finally, I describe myself as a calm, shy and determined individual. I understand that I am not Jesus Christ but a humble servant in the vineyard of Jesus Christ trying my best to live out the gospel values. We are all equal in the eyes of God and realizing my dream of becoming a priest does not make me better than the next person. We are all on life’s journey and pray that when the journey ends we will all arrive safely in heaven. Come celebrate with me on August 16th, 2008. Peace and love! |
